The concept of travel, which stirred great poets that lived between the 18th and the 19th century, who had a strong connection with the La Spezia Gulf and the province of Asti, was chosen as the focus of a tourist promotion project between the boards of the two areas.
The agreement, involving Italy, France and England and presented in the context of the European Interreg III Medoc program, will be developed through a series of events, exhibits, shows, as well as a number of opportunities to sample local cuisine and wine from the areas.
We are therefore speaking of Vittorio Alfieri, restless precursor of Romanticism, who lived a long time in London where he conducted a variety of strong-tinted amorous adventures. He also spent a considerable period in Alsace, where he wrote some of his most important tragedies.
Also Percy and Mary Shelley who lived in Villa Magni in 1822, overlooking the sea at San Terenzo. Originally constructed in the 16th-century, the building was used as the meeting-point for the Barnabite Fathers. It was here that Shelley passed the last days of his life, shortly before he drowned. Lord Byron also spent some time in the building as a guest of the Shelleys, and a cave in Porto Venere was named Byron in his honour. A commemorative plaque recounts the legend of his daring swim from Porto Venere to Lerici.
